• About The Makers' Cabin

    The Makers’ Cabin in Letchworth was born from a complete love of craft and making anything from scratch.

     

    From specific Crochet Lessons, to beginners crochet courses, learning Granny Squares, hats and a jellyfish, there is something crochet based for everyone.

     

    Here you can learn new skills, like Crochet, Macrame, cross stitch or just come and make something crafty with friends. Each visit to the The Makers’ Cabin (based on Highfield in Letchworth, Herts) is unique!.

     

    People come from the local areas of Hitchin, Stevenage, Biggleswade, Luton and Baldock to learn new skills at our craft lessons.

  • COVID-19 Safety

    Things are a little different in the world currently. To make sure we comply with COVID-19 safety keeping both you and the tutor safe some things have changed at the cabin. Please do not come to the Cabin if you are displaying any symptoms of COVID-19 or have had a positive Covid test in the last 10 days.

    Our small class sizes have got even smaller!

     

    The tutor may wear a face shield/ mask for the duration of the workshop.

     

    Either a negative lateral flow test, or double vaccinated status may be checked.

     

    Temperatures may be taken on arrival.

     

    Please feel free to wear a mask if you want to (and request the tutor does too!)

    🪑Layout

    The tables have been pushed back together, but with only 4 people (+ tutor) you'll still be distanced by over 1m.

     

    Hand sanitiser will be available and should be used on entry to the cabin, and the toilet.

     

    A full clean of the cabin/ toilet using antibacterial/ antiviral wipes will happen before and after a workshop.

     

    The door/ window will be open to provide ventilation - you might want to bring an extra jumper with you.

    Where we can, each attendee will have a separate set of equipment for use during the workshop.

     

    If an item needs to be shared, this will be cleaned between each use using antibacterial/ antiviral wipes.

    Beginners Crochet - 3 part workshop

    In this 3 part workshop you'll learn the basics of Crochet. You'll start with a granny square in week one, move onto a hat (with a pom pom) in week 2 and finish with a spot of Amigurumi in week 3. All yarn, hooks and needles will be provided. These workshops will run weekly. If you want to come along to one workshop in particular and can already make a (US) Double crochet get in touch.

    Beginners crochet - Granny Squares

    Come and learn how to make a granny square in this 2 hour workshop. You'll learn about different types of yarn, and hooks, before getting to grips with the basic stitches of crochet. All yarn and hooks will be provided.

    Corner to Corner crochet

    A chance to learn the technique of corner to corner crochet, a great skill that makes blankets super fast! You'll learn how to change colours, and how to follow a graph, as well as increasing and decreasing.

    This is an intermediate workshop, you must be able to US double crochet (UK treble crochet) to attend this workshop. All materials and yarn will be provided and you'll go home with a finished square knowing all techniques you need to expand this onto bigger projects.

    Crochet Necklaces

    £30 - Course dates and booking

    In this workshop you'll learn how to make a crochet necklace using T-shirt yarn. You'll be able to pick from a variety of colours to make this unique necklace designed by the tutor. You'll have enough time to make at least one necklace, maybe even 2 if you've crocheted before! £25 per place, all materials will be provided, and a copy of the pattern to make some more.

    Crochet Mandalas

    Come and learn how to make a mandala in this 2 hour workshop with Vicki from Off the Hook. have free reign over the colours you choose, before using lots of different stitches to make this mandala. This is a great way of increasing the stitches you can make with your hook. Note - you must be able to make a US Double crochet to attend this workshop.

    Crochet Stockings

    In this workshop you'll learn how to make a mini crochet stocking. You'll be able to pick from a variety of festive yarns to make these super cute stockings designed by the tutor, Vicki from Off the Hook. You should have enough time to finish one stocking in the workshop. All hooks and yarn supplied, and you'll take home more yarn to make a few more. This is not a beginner workshop - you must be able to US Double Crochet / UK Treble crochet to get the most from this workshop.

    Pumpkins

    A chance to make a seasonal pumpkin. Make as either a keyring, or an ornament. You'll be using the amigurumi technique to make your very own little pumpkin in a choice of colours.

    A new workshop added for 2019, A beginners or improvers class, learning how to make a poncho. All yarn, and huge coconut buttons included. You probably won't have time to complete the poncho during the workshop, but you'll not have mush to finish at home.

    Crochet Cowl

    Another new workshop for 2019, A crochet cowl. A great beginners or improvers workshop for teaching you how to chain, where to make your stitches, and how to work in straight lines (It's not as easy as it seems!). You won't completely finish the cowl during the workshop (Unless you are super quick), but you will be able to take you hook home and enough yarn to complete it.

    Learn to cable

    Can you already crochet, but are looking to expand your skills? This is the perfect workshop for you. We'll learn how to gain texture using different stitches. You'll go home with the patterns for 2 different hats, and the yarn to make them, after practising in the workshop.

    Violet the Unicorn

    Learn how to crochet a unicorn. This workshop will teach you how to crochet in the Amigurumi method. It will teach you how to read an amigurumi pattern, how to start and finish each piece, and how to sew them together. All hooks and yarn will be provided to make your unicorn (Along with a choice of mane and tail colours). Do not expect to finish your unicorn during the workshop, this will teach you the techniques needed, and send you away with all the materials needed to complete her (or him) in your own time.

  • Glass, resin, Mosaics and jewellery

    Glass Pendants

    A chance for you to make make a unique glass pendant or brooch with Vivien Dent Glass.

    During this 2 hour workshop you will design and make one, pendant or brooch, with the option to make more for a small additional charge. So if you you fancy making some bespoke ear rings, this is the workshop for you!

    Glass workshop - 2 part

    This a 2 part workshop, in session one, you'll make a block of glass, designed completely by yourself. This will be fired in the kiln ready for session 2 (2 weeks later). In this session, you can cut this block to size, using all the glass you've made in previous weeks, ready for a re-firing to turn it into Jewellery.

    You can have matching pendants, ear rings, cuff links, hair clips - you name it!

    Fixings for 2 items are included in the workshop price, further fixings can be purchased at the time for a £1 each.

    Resin

    In this workshop you’ll be taught the basics of how to choose and seal inclusions, mix and use resin and how to deal with bubbles and common beginner problems. You’ll be using a silicon mould to design and make your own resin bookmark. You can bring your own items to set in the resin. Anything can be added as long as it is no bigger than 15 x 2.5cm and no deeper than 2mm. You are only limited by your imagination - from photos to dried flowers, even sweets - pretty much anything can be set in resin as long as it is dust free and dry). You will also be provided with paints and materials to create your own design. Please note, the bookmark will be delivered back to you 2 weeks after the workshop once it has fully cured.

    Silver Rings

    Make your own silver ring at this short introduction to silversmithing. You’ll learn about measuring, cutting, soldering and finishing sterling silver, along with a few different texturing and polishing techniques so you can choose how you’d like to finish your ring. By the end of the session, you will have designed and made your own unique piece of jewellery.

    All materials are provided, no experience needed.

    Silver Bangles

    In this 3 hour workshop We’ll make a variation of the bangles shown in the photos - you can either make them to wear separately or add a ring to combine them into one piece of jewellery. You’ll learn about measuring, cutting, soldering and finishing sterling silver along with some different texturing and polishing techniques so you can choose how you’d like to finish your bangles. By the end of the session, you will have designed and made your own unique piece of jewellery. All materials are included. No experience needed.

    Silver Domed Ear Rings

    Design and make a pair of domed earrings using sterling silver in this 3 hour workshop. Suitable for both beginners and more experienced silversmiths - you’ll learn how to cut, file, shape and polish and how to curve metal using domes and punches. By the end of the session, you will have designed and made your own unique pair of earrings.

    All materials are provided. No experience needed.

    5 week silver smithing course

    Suitable for beginners or for those with some previous silversmithing experience. You’ll learn to pierce, anneal, form, texture and polish sterling silver.
    We will also be covering techniques such as form-folding and texturing using a rolling mill. Over the course of 5 weeks we will make:

    Textured silver Jewellery

    For beginners or people with some previous experience. Make a textured silver cuff bracelet at this workshop. You’ll learn to cut, anneal and shape the sterling silver, add texture using a rolling mill and finish with a choice of polishing techniques.
    You can choose to add texture from leaves, lace, paper shapes, contemporary patterns, wire, fabric, and much more. No soldering is involved and the finished bracelet will fit various sizes, so you can choose whether to make one for yourself, or as a gift.

    The workshop lasts 3 hours. £60 per person. All materials are provided, including homemade cake and refreshments.

    Limited to 4 people per class.

    Pearl Stringing/ knotting

    Come and learn how to make a pearl bracelet. You'll have a choice of colours to choose from before learning knotting techniques, and adding clasps to make a finished bracelet.
    The workshop lasts 2 hours.

     

    £30 per person. All materials are provided, including homemade cake and refreshments.

    Beginners Knitting

    In this 2-hour workshop, Jane from Gardening Witch Designs will teach you how to start knitting. No previous knitting experience necessary!

    You will learn how to cast on, how to master the knit and purl stitches, and how to cast off. You will also learn how to read a knitting pattern, including what all those cryptic abbreviations mean.

    You will receive patterns for 2 simple spa cloths which will let you practice the techniques learned. Yarn and needles will be provided.

    Next steps in Knitting

    Do you already know the basics of knitting, but want to learn more? In this 2-hour workshop, Jane from Gardening Witch Designs will help you progress to the next stage by teaching you about different types of increases and decreases and how to work some simple lace patterns.

    You must already be able to cast on, knit, purl and cast off.

    You will receive patterns for 2 spa cloths which will let you practice the techniques learned. Yarn and needles will be provided.

    Introduction to Sock knitting

    This 2 hour workshop aims to teach the anatomy of a sock and show how a knitted sock is constructed. You will apply this knowledge to knit a mini sock as a decoration, for which a pattern will be provided. Circular needles or double pointed needles (DPNs) and DK yarn will be available for use during the workshop, but if you want to bring your own supplies you will need a 4mm circular needle (80cm or 100 cm in length), or a set of 4mm DPNs, and DK yarn of your choice. Note this is not a beginners workshop - you should be able to knit in the round to get the most from this workshop.”

    Introduction to Magic Loop knitting

    A 2 hour workshop where the aim is to teach how to knit a small circumference tube using the magic loop technique. The students will take home the pattern for a pair of simple wrist warmers which are designed to let them practice the ‘magic loop’ technique. You must be able to cast on, cast off, and have basic knitting skills to get the most from this workshop. Circular needles and DK yarn will be available for use during the workshop, but if you want to bring your own supplies you will need a 4mm circular needle (80cm or 100 cm in length) and DK yarn of your choice.

    A beginners workshop covering the basics of screen printing with Steph from Flat102, from cutting a stencil, adding ink, printing and how to clean up afterwards! All the materials you’ll need, including your choice of either a tote bag or tea towel,

    Brush Stroke Lettering

    Join us for a 2 hour Workshop with Gemma from Mother Wild as your host to teach you the art of Brush Lettering. Starting with how to do drills, form letters and then words to create your own handwritten quote on A4 Card. You will receive a named pack with practise sheets & Duo Brush Pen to take home so you can continue to perfect your own unique Brush Lettering style.

    Come and spend 2 hours with Clara, learning how to draw (beginners) or improve on the skills you may already have. She'll bring all the materials you need, and objects too, to help you master a talent you didn't know you had.

    Terrazzo Clock

    During this 2 hour workshop, you will learn all about Jesmonite, a new quick setting Eco-resin. Step by step you’ll create a one of a kind clocks with a beautiful terrazzo pattern.

    First you will mix small batches of Jesmonite to create coloured chips, then these will be mixed into more Jesmonite and poured into a specifically made mould before demoulding, sanding and sealing before adding your clock mechanism.

    Say It Neon

    Design and make a fabulous statement piece of art for your home! A gin bar sin, a personalised night light, abstract line drawing - the possibilities are endless. You will be shown how to adapt your design to suit the neon stye and how to attach your wire, hiding the electrics!

     

    You'll choose your colours at the time of booking.

    Needle Felting - Hares and Scruffy dogs

    This is a day (£75) or two part evening (£80) workshop suitable for adult beginners and experienced felters alike. In just the space of four and a half hours/ five hours, you can learn to needle felt the most exquisite little Hare or Scruffy Dog.

    You will learn all the basic needle felting techniques so you can make many more creations.

    All materials, are provided. Refreshments of tea, coffee and homemade cake will be provided (for a daytime workshop please feel free to bring a packed lunch to eat during the workshop).
     

    For those who wish to continue felting, equipment, fibres , tools and accessories will also be available to buy.

    Needle Felting - Trophy Heads

    This is a day (£75) or 2 part evening (£80) workshop suitable for adult beginners and experienced felters alike. In just five hours you can learn to needle felt the most exquisite Trophy head of a Highland Cow, Fox or Hare.

    You will learn all the basic needle felting techniques so you can make many more creations.

    All materials, are provided. Refreshments of tea, coffee and homemade cake will be provided (for a daytime workshop please feel free to bring a packed lunch to eat during the workshop).

    Needle Felting - Robin on a Bobbin

    This is a short workshop suitable for adult beginners and experienced felters alike. In just the space of two and a half hours, you can learn to needle felt the most exquisite little robin sitting on a vintage cotton reel.

     

    You will learn all the basic needle felting techniques so you can make many more birds and other creatures.

    All materials, vintage reels, braids, hangers, crowns and glitter are provided.

    For those who wish to continue felting, equipment, fibres , tools and accessories will also be available to buy.

    Darning

    In this 2 hour workshop you'll learn to work a basic woven darn which can be used to make repairs to almost any fabric. We'll discuss equipment, techniques and the value of mending, whether it's in fixing an heirloom knit or making a commitment to less waste. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring a holey item or two along for advice and information.

    Hand Spinning

    This 2 hour workshop is designed for the absolute beginner who is curious about how yarn is produced from animal fleece and wants an introduction to hand spinning with a drop spindle. You will learn about fleece, and how to prepare it for spinning, before you get to try spinning for yourself using colourful fibre and a drop spindle that you can take home with you (to practice some more). No previous experience is necessary and you don’t need to bring anything with you except your enthusiasm!

    Cross Stitch

    This 2 hour workshop is designed for the absolute beginner who wants to learn about cross stitch. You'll go through cloth, thread, how to read a chart, and stitch a design. No previous experience is necessary and you don’t need to bring anything with you except your enthusiasm!

    In this workshop you'll produce a woven hanging using simple weaving techniques.

    Use different wools to create a woven piece exploring texture and colour.

    A workshop run by tapestry artist Lucy Sugden who will guide you through simple woven tapestry techniques to create a piece exploring texture and colour.

    Tight bouquet

    A wonderful workshop learning about flower preparation and care before making a tight bouquet with Sarah Maylin Flowers. You'll then learn to wrap the bouquet, before making a traditional florist bow. All flowers, and materials included. A favourite workshop here at The Makers' Cabin as the cabin smells amazing!

    Christmas Wreaths

    Starting with a copper ring, you'll learn how to construct a traditional wreath, then decorate it with a huge selection of berries, lights and seed heads, before learning how to make a traditional florist bow. All materials are included.

     

  • Private bookings, Hen Parties and baby showers

    Hen Parties

    We can accept private bookings for up to 4 people (Covid restrictions) to come and try one of our workshops as a Hen Parties. This could be a button art party, Pom Pom headbands or even making a macrame hanger each!

    Baby showers

    On a similar line to Hen parties, we can accept private bookings of up to 4 people (Covid restrictions), to come and make something at a baby shower. This might be learning to crochet, and making bunting for the nursery, or even making an amigurumi jellyfish that can be turned into a mobile. Get in touch to discuss your options.
